First off I am not planning on breeding a dog/cat, I don’t even own one but I was talking with a friend of mine about pet ownership and she said she heard ( she wasn’t sure from who) that its healthier and best to have a female dog produce one litter and then neuter them rather than neuter without having puppies. I disagreed and said it shouldn’t affect the health or happiness of the dog if she was neutered and didn’t have a litter. Are there any Vet’s or Breeders that know and why or why not? I know about pet overpopulation and am not advocating it I was just wondering about this question so please don’t start attacking me or preaching, I just want an honest answer and to dispel this myth if it is one. (Sorry but I asked this of a pet site and got *yelled* at and accused of trying to push ‘puppy mill’ pregnancies and being part of the pet overpopulation problem’, etc. etc.

I had a friend that adopted a dog from the shelter and then took the dog to the vet and found out the dog had heartworms. After more testing they discovered the dog had a heart murmer and the heart was severly damaged and it probably wouldn’t hold out much longer. He ended up putting the dog to sleep a few weeks after that because the dog developed breathing problems. The dog was only 2 years old.
Most people I think would have sent the dog back. But he didn’t.
I knew someone else who adopted a dog from a family and they discovered the dog had cancer pretty severe, they also discovered the family knew and lied about it by contacting the old vet. The family told them the dog was spayed and had no health problems. The dog wasn’t spayed and the cancer was female cancer. They sued the previous family for selling a dog under false pretenses and the previous family ended up having to pay the dogs medical bills. The dog survived and lived another 8 years.
In those instances what would you have done?
Its just like with a child, you can’t go into it expecting anything. But I want to know what most people would do

Most people believe health problems in dogs is caused by their size and yet reseach shows that is not the casue. So, has anyone started a breeding program for larger then normal dogs (the giant breeds like Great Danes, Mastiffs, Newfoundlands) for the purpose of breeding out the health problems?
Please, this is not a question about adopting a dog from a shelter.

it depends on the breed, there are different genes that cause white in dogs, in dogs who are predominantly coloured a white dog is genereally caused by a blanket gene that covers the colour and that can have disasterous effect on the breed such as deafness, mange, poor vision and organ defects,
in dogs who are white as a breed its a different gene, a muted biscuit is thier colour and they tend to have normal vision and hearing,
so yes white dogs from breeds who are not usually white do have health issues but dogs who are “supposed to be white do not
