People Against Animal Testing-what Do You Think Of My Speech?
Posted by: Alan in Cat Health Problem, tags: Against, Animal, People, Speech, Testingwhat, Thinkit is supposed to be 5-7 minutes long (it was 6 minutes when i clocked it). is it good for a freshman honors english class? the topic is controversial issues, and we have to prove a point using a speech and powerpoint. (graph not included even though i talk about it)
Okay so first, I’m going to ask some questions, and I would like you guys to raise your hands if your answer is yes.
Have any of you ever used Dove hair products?
What about Neutrogena face wash?
Post-it notes?
Okay now who feeds their dog Iams dog food?
All of these products that I have just asked you about have one thing in common; they have all been tested on animals. Animal testing is a way for scientists to see if everyday products are safe for human use. Although this idea may seem harmless enough, I can assure you that it is far from harmless. These and other companies neglect, mistreat, and abuse animals in testing laboratories to get you products like Iams dog food or your favorite Dove shampoo. Each year, animals ranging from monkeys to mice to dogs are manipulated and defiled by scientists who apply household products, drugs, and other toxic substances to them. According to Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, there is evidence that animals are under a constant stress from fear, loss of control over their lives, and the denial of all that is natural and meaningful to them, such as enjoying company of their own kind and choosing. Some animals are forced to live their whole lives in ratty cages not much bigger than they are, with no food or water for the sole purpose of experimentation by a scientist.
What I am about to say is somewhat graphic, but I want to get across my point to show you the cruelty behind testing. During experiments on rabbits according to PETA, “After placing the substance in the rabbits’ eyes, laboratory technicians record the damage to the eye tissue …with tests sometimes lasting 7 to 18 days. Reactions to the substances include swollen eyelids, inflamed irises, ulceration, bleeding, massive deterioration, and blindness. During the tests, the rabbits’ eyelids are held open with clips. Animals may break their necks as they struggle to escape.” And for all of you cringing, this is only a minute sample of the horrors of testing. After their first experiment, most animals die simply from the negative effects. But if they do survive, they are simply tested on again and again until they are deemed useless, at which point they are euthanized.
There is also another unreasonable factor about experimenting on animals. Their bodies, and reactions to products tested on them are completely different than humans. Animals’ systems work in different ways than a human’s. We never know if a product that is tested on a cat or a mouse effectively will kill or poison a human. Because of this, these tests usually produce useless results and wasted animals. According to Javier Burgos, president of a animal testing awareness group called The Nature of Wellness, “The fact is that animals react differently to different substances, not only from human beings, but also from each other…guinea pigs can safely eat strychnine-one of the deadliest poisons for humans, but not for monkeys”. Substances react differently on unalike animals. Testers simply ignore the difference, which is taking its toll on the health of humans.
Stopping animal testing relies mainly on the progression and advancement of the alternatives to experimentation. It is true that there remain few quality substitutes to animal testing. There are only 2 good alternatives; in-vitro testing and also computer modeling. Although they will never reach to the heights of using live beings, they are still a beginning. If people can develop them more in the future, then we will have a better chance at helping these animals in testing laboratories. Says Kara Rogers, an writer whose work centers around the cruelty of animal testing, “Alternatives to animal testing are primarily based on biochemical assays, on experiments in cells that are carried out in vitro (“within the glass”), and on computational models and algorithms” (Rogers). In Vitro testing uses human cells for experiments instead of animals. The use of human cells promises that there will be no problems with the product if it is tested successfully, since the test was on human cells. So although it isn’t completely verifiable since it is only tested on the cells and not the organs of a human, it can still be used for some products. Since putting a stop to animal testing will take many years, in the mean time we should promote changing animal-based tests to lessen the number of animals used and to minimize suffering and distress.
So in this graph, people were questioned about buying products tested on an animal. They were asked to agree or disagree with this statement: if they found 2 products identical in price and quality
