What are the 10 most important things to know (diet, health, comfort, etc) about looking after a kitten/cat?

I have had to take over the care and maintence of a kitten/small cat which was originally given to My next door neighbour’s Grand-children. They were feeding it boiled rice and corn flakes in milk. It was left outside in the cold (I ’savlaged’ it during a thunderstorm) in a cardboard box with a string around “It’s” neck.The thing seems to be quite happy with Me. I have not given “It” a name yet because I had no intention or keeping “It’. The trouble is that the children have returned to Their parents (not cat owners) and I have been left holding the bag, so to speak. “It” is a black and white female and seems to be growing after every meal. I just give “It” (I really will have to give “It” a name, won’t I?) water instead of milk and table scraps (mince, sausage, steak and canned sardines etc.). The thing is about 10 inches long (nose to base of the tail) and would appear to be healthy enough, albeit it always seems to be hungry. It has a ball to play with. What do I need to know?

How important is a cat’s bodyweight for good health and longevity?

Bodyweight is a big factor in human health and lifespan, but is it also very important for a housecat? I’m not completely sure, but I suspect that my 8-year-old cat may be overweight.

Second Hand Smoke And Pets – Important Information Do Not Report?

Someone reported my question and had it deleted, I posted it for people that actually care about their pets health.
I know it’s not a question but there are people who may be interested in this article. Some people may find it interesting.
Health officials often talk about the dangers of living with a smoker, but few pet parents are aware that our animal companions face similar risks—from respiratory problems to cancer—when exposed to secondhand smoke. New research suggests that secondhand smoke is unsafe at all levels—for humans and pets—so it’s time to get serious about ditching those butts for good.
One recent study shows that nearly 30 percent of pets live with at least one smoker. This is a grave concern, according to Dr. Sharon Gwaltney-Brant, Medical Director of the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center, since secondhand smoke can damage the nervous systems of both cats and dogs.
“Tobacco smoke has been shown to contain numerous cancer-causing compounds, making it hazardous for animals as well as humans,” says Dr. Gwaltney-Brant. “Exposure to secondhand smoke can cause many of the same harmful inflammatory changes in the airways and lungs of dogs as their human counterparts.”
Cats who live with smokers are prone to developing malignant lymphoma, perhaps as a result of ingesting carcinogenic residue when it settles on their fur. Kitty’s canine counterparts are especially vulnerable to secondhand smoke’s respiratory effects, and can develop life-threatening nasal and lung cancers.
Nicotine—found in cigarettes and other tobacco products—is also highly toxic to animals if ingested. A dog who accidentally eats tobacco may develop weakness, muscle twitching, decreased breathing rate, and finally collapse, coma and possibly death. The ASPCA strongly recommends keeping your pet away from tobacco as well as secondhand smoke.
In honor of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month this April, why not resolve to avoid smoking around your pet? Smoke outside and preserve the lungs of your two- and four-legged family members. What Is More Important ? Animal Rights To Exist Or Human Beings?

My neighourhood was swarmed with stray cats lately. Some are them are obviously sick and has open wounds (from fights probably) and posed a health risk to humans. The local animal control agency was called to resolve the problem. They did a good job in catching many of the cats and putting them to sleep in a humane way. However when cat lovers found out, they made a hue and cry in the media, calling for such actions to be stopped. So what do you think, humans or animals (cats in this case) are more important? How can we co-exist ?

What Would Happen If We Locked Our Cat Out Of A Room She’s Use To? Important To Read The Details Below.?

we have 4 cats and one keeps peeing on our bed. we have tried EVERYTHING and nothing seems to work. so we thought of just not allowing her into the room. no she wouldn’t just pee elsewhere because we believe she is not sick. she only pees on the bed and if it were health related she would probably be peeing everywhere right? also 2 of the other 3 cats don’t seem to want her out of the room. we were worried about them fighting. i have read on the internet though that this type of “tough love” may be best for her since it may cause her to assert herself and also have the roam of the house and at the same time she wouldn’t be peeing on the bed. we’ve also read she continues to pee there because she can smell it even after it’s cleaned. so you see this is a big problem and we’re unsure of trying this new tactic. in the end it may work out great but we don’t want to traumatize her. oh i didn’t mention that she has spent 95% of her time in this room since we got her but only because the other 2 cats wouldn’t let her out. otherwise she wants out. sometimes she tries but then runs back in because she doesn’t want to fight the 2 bigger cats(we’ve never seen them gang up on her though, it’s usually one-on-one, perhaps a cats code of honor type of deal). it’s a complicated situation. we would really appreciate any help and/or advise/opinions on the matter.thanks in advance!

if your cat has kittens they end up getting ill or die for no reason and they drink their milk from their mom daily at the right times and stuff … then it’s most likely (i say definently actually) because of their mothers milk. i know from experience because my cat had the same problem and its something that you can RARELY get rid of. if your cat has a litter twice and they die or get really ill then it would be best for you to get them nuetered fast!! because it can cause health problems with your cat when in pregnancy and having kittens and then losing kittens is absolutely heart-braking to you and to your cat … i ended up having to bottle feed her last litter and it still was very difficult fo them . so this is very important to cat lovers and breeders to know !! let me know if you agree on that. –livY
