My brother–in-law is the nicest guy on the planet. He is smart, rich, handsome and fatally single. He says he is happy but I know he is lying. He works like 16 hours a day on his computer doing security stuff for big companies. He never leaves his mansion. He just works, eats and sleeps. He doesn’t watch TV, listen to music, or do anything fun except work out in his home gym.
I’ve tried hooking him up with some nice girls from church and some morally loose girls from the office. I even tried hooking him up with my gay cousin. They all said he is a really nice guy, but he just isn’t interested. I asked him why he doesn’t want to date anybody and he said:
“As a society we are obsessed with forming relationships, but the truth is there isn’t any problem in the world that can’t be solved with enough distance. The search for a mate and the desire for companionship are the two most destructive sources of misery in the world. Not just for humans but for all creatures. Without this compulsion there would be no need for the 10 commandments. There would be no conflict, communicable diseases, war, poverty, or crime.”
“Maybe so,” I said, “but there wouldn’t be any babies either.”
He just laughed then said, “I don’t mean to be rude, but I really don’t want to discuss this any further.”
When my mother was dying of cancer she didn’t have any health insurance and my husband was going to cash out his 401k to pay for her 24 hour care. My brother-in-law took care of everything and saved us from financial ruin – - we didn’t even have to ask! So now, my husband says I shouldn’t bother him about living alone because I will piss him off and we may need his help again someday. Well, I don’t care! This isn’t right and somebody has to fix it! I can’t stand seeing him live by himself like this. It is not natural. He won’t even get a dog or a cat! Is there a way I can have him committed for his own good? What can I say to him to make him stop wasting his life and start dating again?

Circumstances I have are pretty different than usual so I figured I would ask.
We already have dogs and I do the majority of the care-taking of them so I have proved that I can be responsible for the dogs. This dog I want is an adult dog I have been around for 2+ years but owned by someone else, my parents have met this dog and the current owners and like them.
The owners are getting rid of the dog due to new baby and the dog has a minor health problem, NO behavior issues.
My parents thoughts are that we don’t need another pet, but there were already plans to get me another pet as one of mine passed away recently.
Things I can already promise that parents would agree as true:
-I will walk this dog EVERYDAY
-I will do any training still needed on the dog
-The dog can be crated when not watched, we already have a crate of appropriate size.
-I can clean the yard for all dogs in the summer(Still in school)
Anything else I should do? And how should I initiate conversation about it?

I have done alot of research for a very, very long time. very. i know everything you need to know about cats, and i am wishing to get one to join my family. but the only problems is convincing my family, because my parents do NOT want a cat, at all. i already have a bird i am planning on selling in a year… i had a serious talk with my parents last night, and they sent me to bed and now they don’t like it when i talk about cats. i am DYING for a cat, and i ask, HOW to convince my parents for one?
also, they keep going on and on about health, fur, cleaning..they don’t think i’m a responsible girl. HELP! i love cats :’(

I live in Canada, and my city has very good tenancy rules. I thought about sneaking in a cat, but I don’t want to tell lies. And if my landlord ever did find out, I would get evicted. So I don’t want to sneak around. It’s out of the question.
I have a bad case of depression, and I feel very much better around animals. My doctor and therapist even agreed that having a cat would be good for my mental health.
But I moved into this apartment just at the end of September. It is newly renovated with hardwood flooring.
I have the money to care for a cat and would have no problem paying a pet deposit and paying more rent. I have done thorough research on owning cats.
But how can I convince him to get a cat? I really love cats. Fish just aren’t the same… Please only give serious answers. Thanks.
