We MIGHT be looking for another puppy, and I’ve always loved Cavies. The Sheltie we have now was horribly bred (allergies, weight issues; possibly thyroids, possible hip problems, and on top of that, lyme disease), and we’re weary of getting another purebred. We would love a mutt, but you just don’t see mutt puppies around anymore.
Soo, I was thinking about before our Sheltie, when I really wanted a Cavalier! My mom was concerned about their health risks (the heart mostly). How often do you see things go wrong with these guys?
How are they as family pets? How much exercise do they need? How would they get along with cats, horses, and another dog? Kids? Grooming requirements? Are they prone to barking (one HUGE thing we wish our Sheltie wouldn’t do!!)? Chasing cars or people down the street (you can tell I have a herding dog!)? Can they run around freely in the yard (without a fence or leash)? Will they listen to you when you call them (when taught)? How hard are they to housebreak? What are some common behavior problems in this breed? How much $ do they usually go for (in the US)?
Over here, we have a big house, a good amount of land to run around on. Although we aren’t regular with exercise, we take the horses on good, long trail rides and our dog runs along. We do supervise them when outside, but our dog is pretty attached to the house (besides occasionally chasing cars and people down the road). We provide sufficient food and water, and plenty of toys to play with. They are allowed on the couch and bed, but not on tables and stuff, obviously.
So basically, we’re looking for a loyal, loving family pet to get along with everyone, that doesn’t require a TON of maintenance. We loveee our doggie right now, but she is driving us nuts and needs a buddy, haha.

If so, does your cavalier have any heart or health problems?
Has your dog been seen by a cardiologist?
Where did you get your dog?

I have always wanted a Cavalier king Charles Spaniel, and am interested in buying or adopting one.
I love the breed, and would love to adopt one! But, most purebred puppies in shelters, are rescued from puppy mills. I know all about puppy mills don’t care about the dogs, and as adults, they will have major health problems. Health problems, equals big vet bills.
Like most people, I want a healthy puppy. I wouldn’t want to adopt a puppy knowing that a lot of health problems will arise in the future.
This leads me to wanting to buy from a reputable breeder, so I know that the puppy will be an healthy adult, with no major health problems
What do you think? Adopt a puppy, with a big chance of it having health risks in the future. Or, buy from a reputable breeder, knowing that my puppy will be healthy.
I won’t be getting a puppy until the summer at the earliest, so I have time to think. What would you do?
I do feel horrible though. I foster animals for my local humane society. And I know all of these great dogs need homes….but I have my heart set on a purebred Cavalier. Oh, and I already own 3 dogs and 2 cats (most were adopted) so this would be the last dog that I could get for a while….
Thanks for any answers.

Well, thats right. I’ve fallen into the Cavalier trap. I haven’t actually got one but I really really want one. But of course I’m not allowed one, got to do uni, then get a job, then I can get one. And I’ve still got loads of school years left…But I have fallen into the trap and I really want a Cav when I’m able to get one. Would they fit this lifestyle:
First time dog owner
Wants one that can go for lovely long walks but is alright missing one walk every now and then if I’m ill or something
Not aggressive
Easy to train
Very friendly and maybe good with other pets (I might get a cat or maybe another dog)
Good in the car
Will be left with my mum if I leave for long periods so will need to get use to two houses
Good with toilet training and what with me being the dog fanatic I am, lots of attention and cuddles and being spoilt ect ect
Also, I’ve taken many quizes on dog breeds suitable and best for me and it’s always given me the Cav but I overlook it because of the health problems
