Dear Senator Barbara Boxer,
I am a student at Standley Middle School concerned with health, diseases caused by various meats, and animal cruelty. Animals are being slaughtered at 7 billion per year, and a 1.6 billion percentage is used for human consumption. The animals we eat today are abused and kept in factory farms or slaughterhouses, and bred in small places where they must live a horrifying life without their parents. By eating meat, we participate and encourage these horrible acts. It is finally time to take a stand and protect the environment and our animals by saying no.
Although it is said that meat is especially healthy and valuable, as you can see it is not entirely necessary for your body. Meat carries many nutrients, as well as diseases and problems such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, heart disease, high blood pressure, and general cancer. Fresh fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains are all you really need to maintain a healthy organism. Vegetables and fruits are the main sources of nutrients and contain many vitamins and minerals which protect against the harmful diseases that meat provides and does not encourage animal cruelty. It may seem easy to be omnivorous and consume meat, while still protecting against it’s diseases. However, lack of complete vegetable intake is now believed to cause tumor diseases, cardiovascular disease, and degenerative diseases. By not eating meat, you’ll be eating fewer chemicals that are stuffed into the many meats we know today. Fortunately, vegetables contain vitamin A and C, which decreases your chances of cancer or any of the above listed diseases by 46%.
Our body needs a lot of calcium, protein, fibers, carbohydrates and fats. Generally, fats are obtained from eating meats. However, meat only contains saturated fats, which come from animal sources, while plants and minerals contain healthy unsaturated fats which can easily substitute for fatty foods in order to maintain a healthy organism. Although a fiber-based diet lowers bad cholesterol, it also helps with digestion and comes from fresh fruits and whole grains, such as whole-wheat bread and brown rice.
If someone were to treat dogs and cats as other animals are treated in factory farms, they would be convicted for crime and put in jail, but what makes those other animals any less important? Today, the majority of these animals are kept in such cramped places that they can barely move, they are denied any veterinary care, abused and tortured while still conscious, and finally slaughtered. Today, farm animals do not have any legal rights the way household pets do. They are fed drugs to fatten or “spoil” them, which genetically alters them to grow at a much faster pace. Many of these animals are not slaughtered at all, but die within their own weight instead- gained from these various harmful, aging drugs. Centers for disease control state that “70-90% of chickens are infected before they are shipped to markets for sell.” Vegetarianism a healthier lifestyle that does not encourage the cruelty of these defenseless creatures.
Although each animal suffers a great deal of pain, they each do this differently. Cows, for example, are drugged to give a larger amount of milk than naturally given, often never see their babies again, and are hung and left to die when they are too old to produce rich milk. I believe that many vegetarians believe the fair treatment of all living creatures should be legalized to prevent this cruelty. Take a stand against this treatment and say no. Thank you for your help in this matter. Remember, every life counts.
Sincerely,

Im not getting no other answers in the mental health category so im asking here!!
My ex boyfriend has had a troubled past. He has a hard time controlling his temper when angry (one of the reasons it didn’t work between us) he has depression and i personally think he lives in the past to damn MUCH. But besides all that i still love him and we are still friends but here recently he has opened up to me a lot about his past. He told me he killed a little cat once and that he use to talk to imaginary people and he use to spend hours alone by his self on the streets at night???? I don’t know what the hell to think or do. He has had a history of suicidal thoughts and so much more. Should i tell him he needs to get help or is the past the past??

I just don’t know what I should do.
It all started when I was 18 years old (I’m 22 now) I met this guy, I’ll call him Allen.. He was homeless and I was finishing up my High schooling and working part time. He was sweet and kind and very cute. I didn’t care that he was homeless (he was 27 at the time) He kept himself clean and decent. We started dating and he got a friend to let him move in. Months went by and he didn’t get a job. About 6 months into our realationship I told him, If you dont get a job i’m leaving.
His mother died to around this time. He alwasy threw it in my face saying “you threatend to leave me if i didn’t get working around the time my mother died…how dare you”
but i felt, if he didn’t get working soon, his depression would go deeper and he would never make anything of himself. He never held a job and he was almost 30. He also had just became clean on Crystal Meth. I myself never touched a drug other then alittle Pot back when i was younger (I do not smoke pot anymore or drink or do anything after i turned 20)
I at this time had quite my job to help him more and was just about to graduate Highschool. He did get a job. His friend and his friends Girlfriend were about to have a baby. We all got a 2 bedroom apartment. Things weren’t going to well with our roomates but between us it was. I had graduated and started working at a call center with Allen. but he started to get very controlling. He wouldn’t want me to hang out with my friends or see family. I then got pregnant. My roomates were alcholics as well as Allen, was always drunk and it was getting worse.
He was very verbally abusive (I was 19 by this point) My aunt had me move to New Jersey with her. That turned out to be a bad situation. Mainly because she and her husband were trying to get me to leave Allen, but I didn’t want to. I was being blind and stupid, but i felt so guitly. I was in love still and being so far away from him made me feel guilty and horrible that i left. Esp while pregnant.
On the 8th month of my pregnancy i moved back to him. We were still living in that hell hole with the room-mates. I had my baby and in about 2 months we got out own apartment. Things went well for a long while.
But there was still controlling issue’s. He to this day (it’s been almost 4 years we have been together) Calls me names that i dont want to repeat. Wont let me see my friends, He’s gone from this nice guy to this controlling emotionally abusive person. I think it’s because he went from having nothing, to being the “man” of the house and the only one paying for bills in such a short time. It’s a power trip for him and it’s gone to his head. He claims i use him for his money, wich is funny cuz when i met him…he had nothing….
HE’s even threatend to punch me in the face. (he’s never phsycially hit me yet…but i feel it will be soon cuz he is gradually threatening more with it)
He refuses to help me with the baby. He works and I stay home. Yes, i dont do anything anymore around the house like I used to because i’m so depressed. He’s made me break off many friendships. I’m not perfect, by anymeans but i can’t talk to him. Everytime i try to say “lets talk about this…it’ s inportant” or “lets make a budget” or “im upset or bothered about this in my life, how about we talk about it”
he just rolls his eyes and wont listen. He always calls me a child and that i’m not very bright.
He treats my cats like crap to. Not caring how i love them as well.
He’s to spoiling to our son. There has been days that i didnt’ sleep. I know that this is normal for parents but when it goes on for 2 days straight i tell him, i cannot stay up anymore. I’ll pass out (our son has some bad sleeping problems and the doctor told me to just put him in his crib and let him cry it out so i can get some rest) Allen told me, if i dare fall asleep he will kick me and my cats out. but I cannot help it if i pass out right? but he says “oh well..deal? What do you do all day anyways? You just watch a kid? you cant be to tired from that?”
He has no concern for my health, or emotional well being.
He is allowed to go anywhere he wants, but if i dare go out or have friends over he gets so angry.
he also has this friend over who treats me really bad. But it does’t mattter…cuz it’s his friend…right?
A while back, he got a large inheritance from his step father that passed away,
It all got spent. It was about 20 Thousand dollars, we now have about 5 thousand. I had spent about a good 3 grand of that on food for the house, house held products and things we need over 2 years span. He spend the other amount of Taxi’s and holiday shopping and things he wanted, but he still blames me for all of it being gone.
When I tell him i’m leaving he says “great you spent all my money and now your leaving?!!” He puts this guilt on me. I didnt’ spend all his money but he thinks i did. I a few times bought myself some thi

My family just extended by one member. She’s a Jack Russel Terrier / Beagle mix, one year old. My sister’s coworker found her. She had been abandoned by her old family, but she seems in good health, and she’s even spayed already. I have two other dogs, a roughly 14 year old german shepherd / chow mix and a 22 year old besinge.
1. What should we name the new puppy?
2. What should we… do?
3. Will there be problems with her and the other animals? We also have two 16 year old cats.

We MIGHT be looking for another puppy, and I’ve always loved Cavies. The Sheltie we have now was horribly bred (allergies, weight issues; possibly thyroids, possible hip problems, and on top of that, lyme disease), and we’re weary of getting another purebred. We would love a mutt, but you just don’t see mutt puppies around anymore.
Soo, I was thinking about before our Sheltie, when I really wanted a Cavalier! My mom was concerned about their health risks (the heart mostly). How often do you see things go wrong with these guys?
How are they as family pets? How much exercise do they need? How would they get along with cats, horses, and another dog? Kids? Grooming requirements? Are they prone to barking (one HUGE thing we wish our Sheltie wouldn’t do!!)? Chasing cars or people down the street (you can tell I have a herding dog!)? Can they run around freely in the yard (without a fence or leash)? Will they listen to you when you call them (when taught)? How hard are they to housebreak? What are some common behavior problems in this breed? How much $ do they usually go for (in the US)?
Over here, we have a big house, a good amount of land to run around on. Although we aren’t regular with exercise, we take the horses on good, long trail rides and our dog runs along. We do supervise them when outside, but our dog is pretty attached to the house (besides occasionally chasing cars and people down the road). We provide sufficient food and water, and plenty of toys to play with. They are allowed on the couch and bed, but not on tables and stuff, obviously.
So basically, we’re looking for a loyal, loving family pet to get along with everyone, that doesn’t require a TON of maintenance. We loveee our doggie right now, but she is driving us nuts and needs a buddy, haha.
