Long Haired Cat, Getting Older, Very Tangled Fur! Help!!?

I have a wonderful hymalaian cat who I have had since he was a kitten. He is almost 13 years old now and with the exception of having a hard time climbing stairs he is in pretty good health. Lately I have noticed however that his fur is becoming very tangled, we try to brush him every day but somehow within 12hours he has 5 or 6 dreadlocks formed in various places. When he was younger we would bath him once in a while but because of his age we do not want to stress him out with a bath especially if it isn’t going to solve the problem. (Cats naturally don’t need baths, he is an indoor cat so he doesn’t get dirty and he does still clean himself)
Would bathing him help? Is it worth it? (I feel bad brushing the tangles out of him everyday the poor guy is going to end up bald)
Are there any other solutions to this?

I have been having the same problem with my long haired cat. He is a year old, and I have had to take him to have him groomed three times because of his long fur getting tangled. I noticed that when I give him a bath his fur becomes tangled even more, so I think a good spray conditioner will help!

My mother’s cat has the same problem. It’s related to getting old. Get recommendations from your vet for a good pair of clippers or shaver and keep his hair short and brushed from now on. Bathing probably won’t help as the matting comes from the shed hair getting tangled and not from dirt.
eta: alternatively, a shedding (or de-shedding) comb might help, after you remove the mats.

Shave your kitty, and then brush him regularly
