spaying my 2 y/o dog, health risks still lowered?

Question by moedenanotha: spaying my 2 y/o dog, health risks still lowered?
my jrt mix is about 2 years and 2 months old and after much thinking, we’ve decided to spay her. i am sort of kicking myself in the butt for not doing this sooner! will her health risks still be lowered even if she is over 2? she has had 2 heat cycles (that i can remember), one should be coming anytime now.
also, we’ll be going to a vet that participates in a low cost spay/neuter program. do you think this will be okay? is the level of care the same as if i paid full price for our regular vet (pain meds, quality of surgery, etc)?
and sorry for so many questions but one more thing, (i’m sure this will sound silly, but…) will my dog really “know” what has happened to her? did your dogs ever get depressed after being fixed? just a little something i’ve been thinking about…

Yes they will still be lowered. Its okay to go a someone whos a lost cost. Sometimes the quality is better at a vet, but they do a great job as low cost ones too. Dog wont know any different.

dont go to a low cost an if you do check it out with people that have used the place before. I did that with mine and they butchered her. They botched the job and i had over $500 in vet bills to fix her being fixed. trust me. Go for a vet an not a clinic, you will feel much better in the end that you did. The quality of care is a lot different than in a vet office. That is why the vet charges so much money and the clinic dosnt. I had to find out the hard way.

I think that the heath risks will still be lowered, but even more important, you will not accidentally wind up with a pregnant pooch!! The low cost programs are fine. Ours was spayed at a local humane society and they even provided post-op pain meds for her! No post-op depression that I could see. Get it done. You’ll both be just fine!! Take care!

Every thing will be fine. As long as it is a certified vet the cost will be fine. No she will be sore for the first little while she won’t be allowed to do a lot of jumping for the first couple of days ,but she won’t know, she will still come into heat and males will try to stick her, but it’s like a woman getting her tubes tied. she won’t be able to get pregnant; if she does get hung up.
