My Dog Broke A Mercury Thermometer About 2 Weeks Ago?
Posted by: Alan in Dog Health Problem, tags: About, Broke, Mercury, Thermometer, Weeks
I just found the bottom half (without the mercury) and the other broken pieces under my daughter’s bed. This had to of happened 2 weeks ago when she had a high fever and I wanted to double check it with the mercury thermometer. My dog hasn’t been sick, but I’m also worried about the effects of mercury that might have soaked into the carpet. I can’t find any spots. Would the small amount of mercury from a thermometer cause problems for my families health if it was absorbed into the carpet?

I am not sure it soaks in
when ever I have seen mercury loose it usually balls up and kind of rolls around
you might really check the carpet for little balls of mercury and hopefully retrieve them(carefully) and dispose of them

Probably no effects.
Mercury thermometers have been outlawed for years.
Are you sure it contained Mercury?
The government advice for broken glass with mercury is, NEVER pick up the pieces by hand.
These are the instructions for the new mandatory energy savings Mercury light bulbs, made only in China. US cannot make them here.
If broken leave the room until air has settled.
Don a mask.
Pick up the pieces with duct tape and place in a sealed plastic bag.
DO NOT VACUUM!
Use more tape to blot up any remaining residue.
Place tape in bag.
They recommend that it be disposed of as Hazard Materials.
(I have no words to put here)
These are the new Safety Lighting that’s is required next year. All other lights will no longer be made.
My daughter had one explode in her lamp.
I’m sorry if this sounds like I’m writing from a padded cell.
I assure you, I’m not there yet.
With this and Health Care, SOON, I’m afraid.
