My family just extended by one member. She’s a Jack Russel Terrier / Beagle mix, one year old. My sister’s coworker found her. She had been abandoned by her old family, but she seems in good health, and she’s even spayed already. I have two other dogs, a roughly 14 year old german shepherd / chow mix and a 22 year old besinge.
1. What should we name the new puppy?
2. What should we… do?
3. Will there be problems with her and the other animals? We also have two 16 year old cats.

1. I’m not entirely sure that’s way too personal.
2. You should keep it. You need to get it’s booster shot at the least if you’re not sure about it’s current vaccinations.
It also needs a full vet check and should be put on a high quality dog food and you need to be prepared for socialization problems when it comes to other animals.
3. Yes the cats may be territorial in ways you don’t know. The other dogs will probably bond with hi very quickly and even act as guardians but still keep your eye out at first.

Well I would say either Judy or Beverly for the name. Get a collar, lead, crate and a harrness. A great traning metod is have all of the animals in one room together and slowly indroduce them to each other.

Besinge..? Do you mean Basenji? You know that a Basenji’s average lifespan is 10-12 years, right?
1.) Names are very personal things. What’s your favorite character from your favorite TV show, movie, book or play? What character does she resemble? Who is a historical figure you like? You can name her based on her personality or appearance. What are some obvious traits, both physical and temperament?
2.) According to the Humane Society of the United States:
- If you are able to transport the animal, take him to the nearest animal shelter. If you plan to keep the animal in the event no owner is found, notify animal control that you have the animal or that you have taken him to a veterinary hospital for treatment. You usually can place a free “found” ad in your local newspaper. Keep a copy of the ID to prove your good intentions should any question arise later.
- To check on any relevant laws in your state, county or town, contact your local animal control agency, humane society or SPCA. Many times the dog or cat you find along the highway will turn out to be unowned, unwanted and unclaimed. Even so, the person finding the stray dog or cat does not automatically become the owner or keeper—as in “finders keepers”—until he has satisfied certain state and/or local requirements. In almost every state, the animal is not “owned” by the finder until the holding period for strays (as specified by state or local laws) has expired and the finder has made an attempt to reunite the animal with his original owner and/or has taken steps—obtaining vaccinations, license, collar and identification tag—to prove he is now the owner.
- Don’t assume you are dealing with an irresponsible owner. Good Samaritans who have never lost a cherished companion animal may conclude that the owner of the found dog or cat callously abandoned him or, at the very least, neglected to keep him safely confined at home. But accidents can happen to anyone. The frantic owner could be looking everywhere for their beloved pet.http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/animal…
3.) Who knows? That depends completely on the temperament of the new mix, the old dogs’ and the cats’. If she is a dominant, neurotic mess, yes, you’ll have a problem when your dogs try to interact with her. If she’s an avid cat-chaser, yes, you’ll have a problem if she spots your cats. But I have no idea what her personality is. None at all. She could be an absolute dream come true who will get along with all of your animals splendidly.
EDIT: To help — What was the situation when the dogs growled? What exactly was happening, was the stray just coming in, was she bothering them, was she getting in “their space,” was she trying to take their toys or food? How did the “victim” react to the growl? Do they still growl, or are they all comfortable with each other now?
What did you do to discourage her from chasing the cat?
