Why Are Some People So Self-righteous When It Comes To Their Pet’s Diet?

I’ve seen this many times on many different forums. There always has to be a debate about what type of diet people feed their pets.
Almost everyone seems to think that their way is right. Whether it be a BARF (Bones And Raw Food), home-made food, gourmet kibble, or cheap kibble. If someone chooses to feed something else, then they aren’t a very good owner.
Are you a pet owner like this? Why do you think your pet’s diet is the right diet?
My own personal opinion: I feed my pets cheap stuff. Why? Because I have seen firsthand how in the factory the “gourmet” food goes down one conveyor belt and the “cheap” food goes down another. It is the same food in a different bag.
This is done with human food, pet food, clothes, etc. Almost all large companies put out an “expensive” brand and a “cheap” brand. It even comes in the same delivery truck to the grocery store.
My pets also get table scraps. I use my common sense when offering these. They get leftover meats and vegetables.
I think the diet that I feed my pets is just fine. I have 3 cats (10 years, 9 years, 7 months) and 1 dog (7 years). No one has had any health problems so far and they go to vet annually.

Personally, I started feeding my 2 siamese cats the Royal Canin Siamese 38, which I’m sure is about the most expensive brand available (maybe just slightly under Wellness). The only reason I like Royal Canin is because they tailor their foods to different breeds of cats and dogs to meet specific individual needs. I tried Nutro, Science Diet, Purina, and they all had not very good results. This food is shaped so my cat can’t gobble it down and throw it back up later. I have also noticed that my cat’s (who used to constantly have diarrhea) diarrhea episodes have been drastically reduced. And, to be honest, these cats are very expensive and top-of-the-line pure-bred, so I want to keep them alive as long as possible, so I think its a bit more worth it to give them good food so they live a little longer. I do have to agree that most “premium” pet foods are a scam (don’t every buy science diet!), however I feel very different about RC. I’m a bit like you in the sense that I hate it when people rag on me when I ask a question (Like where can i get the 15-pound bag of the RC i like?) and they say I should be feeding my cat wellness or a barf diet (that doesn’t even sound appetizing). If the brand you feed your dog works for the dog’s health, by all means don’t fix something that’s not broken. In a sense it’s kind of like when people who own Mercedes-Benz’s (atleast in my area) seem to think it’s alright to cut people off in traffic {but, no, it’s always the fault of the person driving the cheap ford}, they always have the right of way, they can go a little faster than everyone else, etc.–some people just feed their cats these “premium” diets because it’s a status symbol, because they like to say they can afford to feed their cats “gold” and use $50 bills as toilet paper (but don’t want to sound tacky, so they say they do it for the animal’s health). I’m not feeding my cats the food they get for the status.

Because the diet they are using works well for their dog. Each dog is different and each owner is different. As long as your dog is well and happy with his or her diet, and you can afford to feed them and keep them satisfied, what difference does it make? Consult your dogs veterinarian if you have problems with the diet your dog is now eating.

because some people like to think they know best and anyone who thinks differently is wrong.I’m not like this as I had a cat like to 19 years who was fed on cheap and mid range cat food and was very healthy, although she did get overweight on the cheaper grain filled food so I wouldn’t buy it now.I feed my cat on the food with the highest meat content available locally-it’s expensive but it’s worth it. You need to check the label on the more expensive pet foods-they aren’t all the same as the cheap ones and some are worth the extra. Others however have around 4% of the main meat i.e. chicken cat food has only 4% chicken so isn’t worth the extra money.

It’s just a matter of better health. Most pets (especially mixed breeds) will be fine eating whatever. But that doesn’t mean they’re getting the nutrients they need for stronger bones, better teeth, and all over better health. It’s like vegetables are vegetables, but depending on how you cook it, you either get the nutrients or you don’t. They basically look the same, but they’re not. Most cheaper dog food has fillers and doesn’t help with proper growth and energy at all. But like I said, most pets who don’t eat the “good stuff” are fine..just most of the time aren’t as healthy as they could be. Everyone thinks differently, and some people think of their animals as their children, and only want the best for them. You can’t blame them for that.
