I Need Help On Choosing A Dog! Help! 10 Points For Best Answer!?
Posted by: Alan in Cat Health Problem, tags: Answer, Best, Choosing, Help, Need, Points
Well I’m getting a dog in a month. I am going to take care of it, my responsibility. I am going to walk him/her everyday in the morning even if I have school. Keep in mind I’ve never had a dog, so do you have any tips at all?
I want a dog that doesn’t shed too much. My mom is allergic to dogs but she’s going to get pills or something. I also want a dog that is less likely to get health problems, or few minor health problems. I’m going to be adopting from a shelter most likely.
I also want a energetic dog, & just really happy, friendly & loving.
I do want a big sized dog. But we have a cat & I don’t want him to get scared. Plus I don’t think my parents want a big dog.
He’s not scared of small dogs though at all. Its weird, he’s scared of cats but not dogs haha.
Thank you so much!

My choice would have to be a Shih-tzu. They do not shed, you can have fun with their hair, (it’s pretty fun experimenting with looks
), and their pretty active. The only problem is (atleast around where I live) is you can’t have them outside for long. You don’t know who can be watching them, planning on stealing them! D:

A laborador retriever may be perfect for you. Except that like most dogs, they do shed.
They are big and they are usually tolerant of other animals. They can be very sweet and energetic and happy and friendly and everything you are looking for.
As far as health problems, Labs do tend to get hip problems later in life but for the most part live healthy lives.
Ps. Good for you getting one from a shelter!!

i recommend a miniature schnauzer, best decision i’ve ever made, and they don’t shed at all, so your mom probably wouldn’t even have to get pills (my boyfriend is allergic to dogs, and he takes my dog home with him all the time and she sleeps with him, and it doesn’t bother him at all)
and if you want a bigger dog, i’d just get a standard sized one….
i doubt you will be able to find one at a shelter though.

Poodles don’t shed very much, so a poodle or a poodle cross breed would be good.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are my personal favourite, I own 2 and they are very easy to take care of, although they do need to be brushed a lot. They are small as well.
So maybe a Cavoodle (Cavalier x Poodle) to get the best of both worlds. May not be available at a shelter though!

WOW first of all get a male dog.
I would recommend a beagle.
They are perfect in every way. They’re cute, generally small and very playful. They are easily treatable compared to other dogs and are probably the most loyal you’ll find. They live long and are never aggresive. You’ll find one in a shelter for sure, did I mention they’re cute. Check these pics out.

A Cockapoo is a great mixture of a poodle and a Cocker Spaniel. They are much better at not shedding, like the poodle, but are usually a little bigger than a tiny poodle. Often they are white or black, and very cute and well-tempered.
Here is one on petfinder.comhttp://www.petfinder.com/petnote/display…
Brushing your dog often can help a lot with allergies.
Good luck and enjoy your new friend and take good care of him!

Yorkies are a great choice, especially since your mom is allergic. I’m allergic also, but yorkies are a breed that don’t have dander, which is the cause of most pet-related allergies.
They also don’t shed at all, at least mine doesn’t.

I’ve got a lab mix… it likes cats and it’s great with kids. My dog isn’t great with other dogs, but that’s probably because she wasn’t raised around other dogs. But she is really friendly and energetic and stuff and she was pretty easy to get house-trained too.

I know this isn’t really answering your question, but this test is both very informative and kinda fun! (Well, it was for me)http://animal.discovery.com/breedselecto…
I hope this, along with the other answers here, help point you to the right breed!

A shih tzu.
If allergies or pet dander is a problem….maybe a greyhound(they have really short hair) Italian greyhounds are also really good….they are smaller version of a greyhound.
Good Luck.

You’re probably looking for something with cocker spaniel in it. I had a cocker spaniel (mixed, I think. Mixes are best because they live longer and have less health problems than purebreds because there isn’t as much inbreeding) and he was a darling! He was always happy, energetic, and fun to be around. Some of the things you have to deal with, with Cocker Spaniels is grooming (mine didn’t shed, but some of the web sites I’ve been to said that they do, so I don’t really know) um, right, but grooming! Their hair gets pretty long so you have to brush it and get it trimmed regularly to avoid matting. Also you need to pay special attention to their ears because they are long and floppy, so they can sometimes get dirty and infected. Also Cocker Spaniels can get really attatched to their owners and they have a tendancy to get seperation anxiety and bark and whine when the people they love aren’t around. But that just means it loves you a lot! They have lots of love to give! My dog was abused before we got him (I hate all of those horrible people who treat animals as if they are nothing!), but even after all he had been through he was still sweet and loving right from the moment we got him at the shelter : ) That’s all I can think of about cocker spaniels. But if I were you I would go to the shelter and tell them the type of animal you’re looking for, they will be able to help you more than anyone here could. And then when you are looking at the dogs, just get the one your heart calls out to! And you and your new dog will be really happy!

Your best bet for a first step would be to check out some of the dogs on http://www.petfinder.com. You can search based on your location and how far you will travel to get the dog, and the site will also tell you if the dog has been “cat tested” or “kid tested”, and what the outcome was! As far as the shedding goes, no mater what anyone on here or anyone else tells you, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A NON-SHEDDING DOG!!! LOL Poodles shed. All the silly Poodle “hypoallergenic” mixes like Labradoodles and Goldendoodles shed. All dogs shed. Period. End of story. LOL The only thing you can do is find and pick breeds that don’t shed as much as say, a Lab or a German Shepherd. I have Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes, and they barely shed at all, except for a moderate amount in the spring and fall, like all dogs. At a shelter, you may not know 100% what the dog’s breed(s) may be, so generally speaking, a dog with a shorter coat that lays flat and slick, such as a Pit Bull, a Vizsla, a Pointer, Greyhound, etc., will tend to shed less than a dog with a rougher, thicker coat like a Lab, Shepherd, Husky, etc. Good luck!!!

I would suggest a bichon frise. Bichons are fun, playful, happy, and energetic little dogs. They make great lap dogs too! Bichons have a very plush coat that needs to be groomed daily. If you want to keep the coat short I would suggest getting a puppy cut. Bichons do not shed that much so they are a good breed for allergy sufferers. Their energy level is medium because they love to play and relax sometimes. I would also recommend searching petfinder.com for a list of your local shelters that have bichon frise or bichon mixes! I wish you the best of luck with your new puppy (: Good Luck!

If you want a big lovable, obedient, loyal, beautiful dog get a golden retriever. They are very easy to train. They need grooming, but not that much. They need lots of exercise because they were bred to retrieve things so they need lots of fetch, running, and walking. Great dog for a family or just for a girl. They need attention though so it is a big commitment to buy a golden retriever. They are pretty healthy but they can get hip dysplasia (sorry for spelling). Make sure that if you get a golden you take it to the vet and take care of it. Remember, it is a living thing with feelings and a life. Golden retrievers are very calm dogs and usually have no problem with other animals including cats.

I would recommend a Boxer, but then again I am very biased.
They are wonderful, playful dogs and they get along with everyone/everything. We had a Boxer when I was little and supposedly I would pull it’s tail and the dog never had a negative reaction.
They have short hair and they never really shed. If you pick them up and you’re wearing black, some will come off on your clothes, but furniture and such are safe.
My cousin is allergic to dogs but her family has always had Boxers as well. I think because of their short hair they aren’t too bad for people with allergies.
If you want to get an idea of the general disposition of the dogs, go on youtube and look up ‘Boxer Dogs’. There is also a really cute video if you type in ‘Boxer dogs and bonnie hunt show.’
Congrats on getting a dog! They are a wonderful addition to life!!

ok first of all, do u have a big backyard?? it you do, go for a big dog, something like a golden retriever. they are really friendly and get along with families very well. They need quite a lot of exercise, so you have to walk them at least once a day. if you want a medium sized dog, go for a beagle or a shetland sheepdog. they are playful and fun. if your looking for a small dog, a jack russell is the way to go, they are energetic and love walks, but you do have to keep them busy, coz they can start digging up the garden if u don’t keep them busy.
other small or medium dogs you should consider are
-cavalier king charles spaniel
-Spoodle
-border collie
-Dalmations
-yorkshire terrier

you really don’t get to choose breed at a shelter. get the dog you like the most. hold it and see about the shedding situation. small short haired dogs will be the best in the non-shed category, they’ll still shed, but they won’t go thru a full, messy summer shed like alot of large dogs do. stay away from beagles, they stink. remember, big dog, big appetite, giant poo. unfortunately most shelter dogs tend to be pit bull mixes. you’ll have to drop by every day to get a small one or any purebreed. watch your local classified for free dogs, but stay away from grown purebreds, if it’s a costly dog and only a year old, chances are it’s not potty trained or has some other bad habits. if a person if offering a (grown)free dog, try to go to their house and smell, does it smell like poop or pee? you got a bad dog. once they develop the habit of going indoors, it’s hard to get them to stop. a mutt would be best for health issues.
i have an italian greyhound. she was a bit pricey but she’s one of the best dogs i’ve ever had. the only reason i don’t say best is i had a stray dog that just wandered into my yard as a child that was wonderful. he looked like he had some bull terrier (not pit bull) in him and he was marvelous.
