How Do I Get Insurance On My Dog?
Posted by: Alan in Dog Health Problem, tags: Insurance.
I have a two year old English Mastiff. I understand that they are prone to health problems. I want to be prepared. Does anyone know how to go about getting insurance on him?

1. Shop around for a good company. In the US, there are around a dozen or so pet insurance companies. A good place to start is petinsurancereview.com . Read both positive and negative reviews to see what you might be dealing with.
2. Decide if you want all the bells and whistles. Some companies offer routine coverage (shots, check-ups). In my opinion, it’s not worth it because they are just charging you the same cost + a little extra through the premiums. It doesn’t really save you any money at all.
3. Look out for benefits schedules which are caps on how much a company will pay for a certain treatment. Find out if there are limits on the amount of claims per year, and $ amount per claim.
Find out if they reset your policy each year. Companies that do this will consider all conditions that happened the previous year to be “preexisting”, thus won’t cover it after the first year that it happened. Totally unfair in my opinion.
4. Go to the company of your choice’s website. Get a quote. Enroll online. Or call their 800 number and their customer service can help you sign up. It’s that easy!
My personal recommendation is for Trupanion which is what my dog is insured through. They don’t reset the policy every year, don’t raise your premiums as your dog ages. No claim limits or annual limits, just a lifetime limit. And no benefits schedules, they cover 90% of the *actual* bill that you bring home from the vet.
Hope this helped!

You would need its health insurance and liability one as well just in case it would cause any issue to other humand or pets. Just like any automobile insurance, it will need its own health and liability as well..
I don’t think your dog insurance will cover it but check with your own home insurance. It might not be on the policy but some companies have this written down, if you have chosen initially…
Try look out on the web for estimate and programs, there are many out there…

Don’t waste your money on insurance premiums. I have heard too many stories of pet insurance companies denying a claim. I have also read a few policies and the list of what was covered and not covered made me not want to buy a policy. Be your own insurance policy. The best insurance you can have for your pet is money in the bank.

It’s really not hard to get insurance on your dog. You’ll probably need to get a vet check to make sure that your mastiff is healthy first through. I don’t think they will cover your dog is he already has developed health problems.

The Petsmart here has a vet clinic inside of it, and they offer doggie insurance. Just check with a vet, or do some searching online. I’m sure you can find something. I have a 3 year old Jack Russell who is my baby. She got hit by a truck right before she turned 1 and we had to put 3 grand worth of surgery on credit cards. I wish we’d had it then. She has been to the vet 10x more than I’ve been to the doc, in the past 3 years. lol. Good Luck!

This is a good thing to see what your vet suggests. Do the research just like you would for your insurance and choose what fits you and your dog best.

Pet health insurance is highly required nowadays because of the escalating cost factors pertaining to the health maintenance in dogs and other animals. Dog owners need to find pet insurance firms that settle dues to the pet owners without much delay and in a more appropriate manner.
Hence, know the approved list of your local animal care hospitals. Even have the list of veterinary experts who are specialized in dog’s health care and disease management measures. Many firms cover up the cost made towards undertaking of surgeries, radiographic examinations, treatment of specific conditions, laboratory fees towards undertaking of various laboratory examinations, and more.
If you don’t like the insurance firm, at any time, you can cancel the insurance policy. A licensed veterinarian list should be available with all insurance firms. Many payment options are available for the pet owners.
